Legal Vocabulary

  • case - a situation and all the information about it
  • charge - to make a claim of wrongdoing against; accuse or blame for a crime
  • client – a person who pays another for work
  • courthouse - a building housing judicial courts; .a building housing the offices of a county government ; a county seat.
  • defend - to help a person blamed of a crime
  • defendant - the person blamed in court for a crime
  • evidence - what witnesses say and the things given as proof in a court of law.
  • grand jury – a group of persons who meet in private to decide if a person charged with a crime will be go to trial
  • guilty - did the crime
  • illegal – against the law; not permitted by law
  • innocent – did not do the crime
  • jury - a group of persons who hear a trial and decide if the defendant is guilty or innocent
  • lawyer - one whose job is to give legal advice and help to clients and represent them in court or in other legal matter
  • legal - connected with the law; permitted by law
  • trial – the legal process in court that shows the evidence to a jury who then decide if a person is guilty or innocent.
